This week we asked you who some of your favorite female artists were, in honor of International Women's Day and Women's History Month!
So let's see what you all said...
First up is Mei Semones! Her sound can be described as alternative indie pop with both Japanese and English lyrics. She is currently based in New York but has a good following in Atlanta as well. She has recently transitioned to doing music full-time, as of her past year's successes in touring with artists like Elephant Gym and Liana Flores. Semones will be touring soon in her first ever headline tour with guest, John Roseboro. This tour is to celebrate her debut album "Animaru," out on May 2nd.
Next is Lauryn Hill. Hill is most credited with blending hip-hop and neo-soul into her music. She has broken many barriers for female artists and is credited as one of the greatest female rappers and musical artists of her generation. Hill came to prominence as a frontwoman for "The Fugees" and became the first woman to win a Grammy for Best Rap Album with their second album "The Score." "Killing Me Softly" was and still is one of the most iconic songs from the 90s. But Hill's debut solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" garnered even more success and acclaim. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" became recognized as Song of the Century and the album itself became the first recording by a female rapper to earn a diamond certification.
earth 2 tiffany has a very mellow indie sound that can be compared to artists like Clairo and Faye Webster. With earth in her name, this artist clearly captures that feeling of being in a forest on a spring day. That feeling accompanied with an acoustic guitar and heavenly vocals really accentuates her earthly and ethereal aesthetic.
Clairo first went viral in 2017 with "Pretty Girl" and most of us can remember the 2019-2020 era with her album "Immunity." She has made a lasting impact on the indie genre of music, also coming from lo-fi and soft rock roots. She rose to fast fame with her hit songs and continues to make music that keeps her fans happy, and continuing to perform and release music with artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Jack Antonoff.
Deb Never (or Deborah Jung) hails from the Pacific Northwest and creates alternative and indie music. She can be paired with artists like many of these in this list! Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers are some of the more similar artists that Deb Never shares tones with.
When she's not modeling, Bella Yorke spends her time creating music as an Atlanta-based artist. Though she has only 9 monthly listeners, Yorke is constantly releasing music on her Instagram. Her voice is mainly accompanied with an acoustic guitar and holds a very deep beautiful tone. Her voice has similarities to artists like Billie Eilish and Lorde which pairs well with the haunting tone a lot of her songs carry.
Nicole hails from Acworth, Georgia, and describes herself as an "anti-social artist." Her music falls under many categories but mainly rap with some R&B and indie influence. She started off releasing music on SoundCloud but with the release of "Love vs Lust," Nicole has consistently continued her passion of music.
Last but not least is Kero Kero Bonito. This band is made up of three members but their frontwoman is Sarah Midori Perry. The trio hails from South London and is described as a British pop band with genre influence from dance and electronic pop. Formed in 2013, Kero Kero Bonito continued making music until around 2021 (with the exception of a joint single called "the situation" with mxmtoon) but still remains active on socials, even releasing a video with mxmtoon recently. Fans are eagerly awaiting a new album from the band and hopefully a tour to pair with it.
